Many people have experienced the phenomenon of “predicting” the birth of an unborn child by holding a ring on a piece of string over the abdominal area of a woman’s body and asking if the child is a girl or a boy. Alternatively, a farmer (or dowser) searching for a potential water bore in a field may use dowsing rods, or a pendulum.

Among the many uses of a pendulum, my wife and I have experienced using them to search for lost keys in our home. Yes, they were found in an unexpected place. At another time, I searched for a sewage pipe buried underground in a house we were living in and found its location.

That is only the beginning of understanding the use of a pendulum, as our spirit helpers, guides and universal energies also contribute to the effective use of a pendulum. However, pendulums should only ever be used with a positive mind energy, and for the greater good!

A pendulum on a piece of string can be made of various materials as long as there is a pointed end - a nail, a key or plumb bob will work, or something of your individual preference that only you use.
Many years ago, I facilitated a pendulum segment as part of a weekend workshop. I made fifteen pendulums from a linoleum tile with cotton string and they worked well. However, most people prefer a crystal, a wooden weight, or even a builders ‘bob’ as their personal choice.
An internet site, Ask Your Pendulum provides an excellent guiding source for beginners and experienced pendulum users. The Dowsing Society of NSW takes these processes much further. In addition, Spiritual Light also provides a deeper spiritual explanation of how a pendulum might work.

Program your pendulum’s signals. You only need to do this step once, unless you decide to make changes afterwards. The purpose of programming is to establish signals for each of these answers:
  • Yes
  • No
  • Maybe (which can also be interpreted as "I don't know" or "I don't want to say").

Here are some common, easy-to-read signals that you can choose to use:
  • front to back (like a head nod - common for “yes”)
  • side to side (like a head shake - common for “no”)
  • clockwise circle
  • counter clockwise circle
